Once you’ve met one dyslexic,

                     you’ve met one dyslexic.

~Julia Nelson, adult dyslexic and teacher

Each child’s experience with dyslexia is unique.

This site is designed to point you toward information that will shatter any myths you may have concerning dyslexia and provide encouragement along your journey to  help your child recognize personal strengths, overcome challenges by  learning to live with and accommodate them, and most importantly, thrive.  To that end, go ahead and dive into a deep exploration of both the film and website highlighted on this page.

Embracing Dyslexia

Embracing Dyslexia  is both a film and a website.

As you spend time watching the film and exploring the resources on the site, you’ll be introduced to a variety of children, families, teachers and guides.

You’ll meet adults who describe their own journeys with dyslexia.

You’ll learn about challenges you may encounter with school systems and how to approach them.

You'll hear from passionate experts.

The full 50 minute film can be viewed directly from the site in either English or Spanish.  It was produced by filmmaker Luis Macias whose son was diagnosed with  dyslexia when he was eight years old.  Their experiences and challenges spurred Macias to tackle the issues surrounding dyslexia with a film.

Additionally, there is a page of fifteen full video interviews with many of the people you'll encounter in the documentary itself.  It's a wealth of information.  You may want to begin with this interview with Deborah Lynam who is one of the founding members of Decoding Dyslexia, a parent-led grassroots support and advocacy movement with chapters in all states and four Canadian provences.  In it, she offers great advice to parents of children with dyslexia who are just beginning their journey.
