Just say the word: Dyslexia

A young woman I know was approached in the bookstore where she works by a mom who had just become aware of her child’s dyslexia.  She didn’t know how to ask for help, had no idea what might be available, and was embarrassed even to say the word dyslexia.  So she whispered it: dyslexia.   It surprised her when the young woman perked up to say, "I’m dyslexic!” and then offered suggestions, material help, and most importantly living hope by showing that it's possible to thrive with dyslexia.

My hope for this site is that it will introduce parents to a variety of people who will just say the word dyslexia right out loud.  They will encourage you to know that your child can thrive.  I'll point you toward resources to clear cloudy thinking, shatter myths, bring encouragement, and assist you to educate yourself so that you can help your child thrive

I'm Kitty.   I'm a parent with a dyslexic daughter who is now an adult but I was once in your shoes.  Please allow me to use my skills as I lead you toward the valuable, reliable information you need.  I've worked in a public library for nearly 20 years and have just completed the work for my Master of Information Degree through Rutgers University in January of 2019.  Questions?  Contact me:  kitty.berner@rutgers.edu

  these things first

Get Educated

And then go a little deeper . . .

Click play to watch the trailer for the film, The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia, which the New York Times said, "Busts any preconceptions on what people with dyslexia can achieve."

The full film, which lasts one hour and forty-five minutes, can be rented or purchased through YouTube directly from this link.

Another option is to search WorldCat to find the dvd in a library near you.  I've provided a short WorldCat tutorial here if you're unfamiliar with how this catalog works.

Click the cover to visit the site's books page.  Selected materials both for you and  your child are described there.
